David Ayer's Suicide Squad caused quite the buzz when it came out in 2016. Critics hated it but audiences were more receptive to the DC Extended Universe's shenanigans and it made a not inconsiderable $750 million.

Well Harley Quinn and her misbehaving pals are coming back. Can Warner Bros get it right this time? Will the film live up to its trailer second time around? Will Harley find an outfit that offers a modicum of protection in a fight? Here's everything we know.

Suicide Squad 2 director: Who's filming it?
Suicide Squad director David Ayer won't be back for a second run on DC's government-sponsored team of villains, choosing Gotham City Sirens' "story about three fantastic women who're trying to find their way in the world" instead.

Vocal superhero movie detractor Mel Gibson was in talks for Suicide Squad 2 at some point, but Warner Bros looked to have finally settled on Gavin O'Connor. O'Connor has already worked with the DCEU's Batman Ben Affleck on The Accountant. His other credits include Warrior and Jane Got a Gun.

The Suicide Squad, DC's group of antiheroes that saved the world in 2016, is due back in theaters again with Suicide Squad 2 in 2019. Plot for the movie has not yet been revealed, but writing for the story is reportedly underway. Adam Cozad heads the writing team along with writers John Ostrander and Zak Penn. While the first movie was written and also directed by David Ayer, no official announcement has been made on who is taking the directorial rein for the sequel.

There have also been reports claiming actor-director Mel Gibson is being considered for the job. English filmmaker Guy Ritchie has also been reported to take interest in directing the movie. which is set to start filming in 2018.

Aside from actor Joel Kinnaman who plays the role of Rick Flag, other cast rumored to be back are actor Will Smith who plays Deadshot, actor Jared Leto who plays Joker, actor Jai Courtney as Boomerang, actress Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, actress Cara Delevigne as Enchantress, and actress Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The first Suicide Squad introduced each character's background, and how they were chosen by Waller to save the world from an ancient supernatural threat. They agreed to go on the dangerous mission in exchange for lowered sentences. True to the name of the movie, not all of them survived the mission.

More details about the upcoming movie are expected to come out soon, but for now fans can only speculate.

Suicide Squad 2 leaked footage

it turns out that the reason Gavin O'Connor appears to be no longer writing and directing Suicide Squad 2 is because the story was far too similar to another DC project in development. Shortly after kickstarting their DC Comics-based shared movie universe in 2016 with Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. quickly moved to expand the then-burgeoning franchise with David Ayer's Suicide Squad, thus featuring the first live-action feature adaptation of DC's Task Force X.

Suicide Squad notably starred Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in her first live-action appearance along with Will Smith as Deadshot and Jared Leto as the Joker, among plenty of others. While it certainly wasn't a critical success, it was an irrefutable commercial achievement for the studio, which is why they quickly started developing a sequel as well as a few potential spinoffs. One of those spinoffs, Birds of Prey, was recently given the green light and will now release in February 2020. But, it appears that moving that movie into pre-production has inadvertently forced the current team behind Suicide Squad 2 to vacate the project.

According to Variety's Justin Kroll, Gavin O'Connor exited Suicide Squad 2 because the story that he recently co-wrote with Todd Stashwick and David Bar Katz - which Stashwick recently said the sequel's script was turned into WB - was apparently too similar to Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey, which is based on a script by Christina Hodson. Since WB greenlit that movie instead of his, O'Connor reportedly got frustrated and left. And so, the studio has now hired James Gunn to write Suicide Squad 2 and potentially direct.

If Dave Bautista joins the cast of Suicide Squad 2, which DC character should he play? When the bombshell dropped that James Gunn was hired to write (and possibly even direct) the next Suicide Squad film, Bautista was among the first to not only tweet his support but he literally volunteered to sign up! For months, the former WWE Champion has been one of Gunn's most vocal and loyal supporters, repeatedly taking Disney to task for their decision to fire Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It's now a distinct possibility that Bautista could indeed leave Marvel behind and follow his friend into the DC Extended Universe.

Before Warner Bros. announced their acquisition of James Gunn, Suicide Squad 2's original plans were mired in developmental hell. The director originally slated, Gavin O'Connor, left the film over creative conflicts with the studio. Enter Gunn, who took a little-known Marvel comic about misfits in outer space and turned it into a mega-popular billion-dollar film franchise. Obviously, WB hopes lightning will strike again, this time giving the filmmaker free-reign to reconceive Suicide Squad as he sees fit, and fans are chomping at the bit to see what Gunn will decide to do and which villains he will utilize. WB turning Gunn loose on Suicide Squad 2 is especially ironic considering the studio unsuccessfully tried to turn David Ayer's original Suicide Squad into a Guardians clone. However, many fans feel Suicide Squad and the DCU's motley collection of supervillains is actually a better fit for Gunn's talents than Guardians of the Galaxy ever was.
